Chapter Eight

Brent looked at his phone’s caller ID and reluctantly answered it. “Hey, Bill.” Brent sat on his efficiency’s tiny verandah sipping a beer and watching the waves roll in.

“Brent, how’s the vacation going?”

A vision of Alex’s sexy ass popped into his mind. “Fantastic.”

There was a chuckle through the phone. “Sounds like someone’s getting a little something-something.”

“Jesus, what are we, teenagers?” Brent admonished although he couldn’t hold back the smug smile.

Bill sighed. “Sometimes I wish I still were, or at least still a college kid. Life was simpler back then.”

“In some ways, maybe,” he replied thinking of how dependent Alex was on his parents and how that dependency kept him locked in the closet. “So what’s up? You didn’t call just to chat.”

“You know me too well.” There was a pregnant pause. “I know you’re out until after Labor Day but I was wondering if you could move up your return date by about a month.”

“Why, do you have somewhere you want me to go?”

“Um, yeah. Syria.”

He closed his eyes. Christ! “I don’t know, Bill.”

“It’s a tough assignment, I get that. There isn’t any place in the world right now that’s more dangerous. It’s important news, though. They’re talking sarin gas for God’s sake, and now we’re maybe going to arm the rebels. We need boots on the ground covering the story.”

Brent shouldn’t have been surprised. With Iraq and Afghanistan slowly winding down as hotspots, Syria was the new ‘It Girl’ for reporters and photographers. It was also a place where people were dying while trying to cover the conflict—people he had known, friends even. His hand shook slightly as he took a swig of beer. Long seconds ticked by.

“Brent, you still there, buddy?”

“Yeah, sorry. I was just thinking about it.” He swallowed hard. “I’m not sure I can take that assignment.”

More seconds passed in silence. “I understand. You were pretty shook up by that IED, but, Brent, man, this is right in your wheelhouse. I don’t have a better war photographer to cover this story. I need you.”

In the past, ego alone would have had him packing his bags. Now his heart raced and sweat trickled down his back. He didn’t think he could stomach another war, risk his life while taking pictures of the dead and dying. Chemical weapons too? Shit!

“I need to think about it.” His voice was curt, part resentful, part disgusted with himself that he wasn’t jumping at a great opportunity.

“Sure, buddy, take a few days. I’ll call you on Friday.”

“Fine. Bye.” He shut off his phone and tossed it onto the table next to him. With one long gulp, he finished his beer. He didn’t know what he was going to do about Syria and didn’t want to even think about. All he could think of was Alex and what he would do with the boy the next time they met up.

Brent thrust hard into Alex’s ass as he sent one cheek quivering with a slap of his palm. His sub
