“Hey man,” I say nervously as I round the front of the van to where Lakyn is standing. He looks at me for a moment before he nods and takes a drag from his cigarette.

Okay, this isn’t the same person as yesterday. Adapt, I tell myself.

“So, how much further till we get to … uh, wherever?” I ask him, scratching my head nervously.

“Depends on Beatrix,” he replies evenly.

Beatrix? Since when does he call her Beatrix?

“Oh. Okay. So, um …”

“Still stumbling?” Lakyn asks, looking at me with amused smirk on his face. “I can’t possibly make you nervous anymore. Not after the way I fucked you.”

My face turns red and I can sort of understand why Bea snaps at him as much as she does now. The man has zero finesse— amazing to look at, and even better with his dick, but his problem is that he knows it.

“You should probably work on your self-confidence, I think it’s lacking some,” I reply sarcastically. Almost immediately I regret my tone of voice. I’ve never really had a bad thing to say about anyone before, but Lakyn knows how to push buttons and he does it often.

The look of surprise on his face mixes with appreciation and he nods. “Balls dropped, I see.

Good shit; we’ll get along a hell of a lot better now.”

I eye him wearily.

Apparently to be Lakyn’s friend, you have to be willing to be an asshole and kill indiscriminately, and I still don’t understand why.

“Listen, I want to be honest with you, if you’ll let me,” Lakyn says, rubbing his chin thoughtfully with his thumb. I shrug and nod, bracing myself for the worst. “I really don’t think you’re cut out for this lifestyle.”

I raise an eyebrow, wondering if he remembers cheering me on when I crushed in Kylie’s skull, but I don’t challenge his statement, because I know he’s right.

“And I obviously don’t want to hurt your feelings unless I want Princess Trixie to cut my balls off,” he continues, rolling his eyes, “but I think the best thing would be is if you just fucked off, you know?”

In a way, I agree with him. The common-sense part of me sees this as the out I’ve been hoping for and is ready to tuck tail and run. However …

“No way,” I reply, shaking my head. “I know Bea is working her way up to something big and I want to be a part of that.”

Lakyn doesn’t look at me, but I can see his lips curve into a grin. It seems I’ve impressed him yet again, because when he finally does look at me, he takes the two steps we have between us, closes up the space, and looks into my eyes.

“If you fuck this up, I will kill you,” he warns quietly. “Princess Trixie be damned. I will fucking kill you.”

My hands are shaking, but I hold my ground and feel something I’ve honestly never felt before in my entire life.
