“I didn’t see their faces,” Mom revealed nervously. “They were dressed all in black. They had masks on.”

“That’s okay,” I told her. “Just tell me what you did see.”

“There were two of them,” she began. “They came up behind her.”

“Did they have guns, or knives or tasers or…”

Mom shook her head slowly. “No. Nothing like that.”

“Spears, maces, grenades,” God suggested unhelpfully.

“Really?” I mocked.

“What? It’s a museum. Probably not hard to find here,” the lizard replied defensively.

“I didn’t see any weapons,” Mom said, ignoring our squabbling. “I didn’t see their faces. I’m useless.” She hung her head, and I could see that her lower lip was trembling.

“No,” I told her, grabbing her arm. “This is helpful.”

“They were just so quiet and quick,” she said.

I frowned. That description sounded familiar. Dressed all in black, no faces visible, quiet, quick. It’s actually exactly how I would describe ninjas.

I scanned the room, searching for Ms. Whitehat. Was she somehow responsible for this? She was the only person I knew who had ninjas at her beck and call.

“Ninjas,” God whispered, echoing my thoughts.

“Then they just picked her up and carried her away,” Mom continued with her story.

“So you didn’t actually see them hurt her?” I asked, confused. After all, she had told me that Adelain had been killed. Plus, I’d seen the blood with the hat in the restroom.

“No,” Mom said, doubt creeping into her voice. “I just assumed that when two men carry a woman off that they’re going to kill her.”

“It’s not a totally insane assumption,” God piped up from my chest.

I rubbed my mother’s arm, trying to soothe her. It might not be a crazy assumption, but it had been made by someone who lived with insanity.

“I should have done something,” Mom said, wringing her hands nervously.

“What could you have done?” I asked. “You came and got me.”

“And you didn’t believe me,” Mom accused, not making any effort to hide the hurt in her voice.

I winced. “I’m sorry.”

“They took her, Maggie,” she said worriedly. “And nobody’s looking for her.”

“I am,” I promised. “I need you to go back and sit with Aunt Susan.”

Mom rolled her eyes. “She’s the chaperone from hell.”

“She just wants what’s best for you,” I murmured.

“She’s controlling.”

“She’s concerned,” I countered.

Mom cocked her head and squinted at me. “Since when do you defend Susan?”

“Since I got a better idea of how much she does to take care of the family.”

“Unlike me,” Mom said sadly.

“That’s not what I meant, Mom,” I said, giving her a quick hug. “I’m just saying that Aunt Susan does a lot. More than people know, I’m sure.”

“Like you?”

I blinked, surprised at the clarity that I heard in my mother’s tone as she asked that question. “I try to do my part,” I replied awkwardly.

“I’ve heard that you do more than your part,” Mom said.

I wanted to ask her who had told her that. I wanted to know what their read was on what I did. Before I could ask, though, Mom said, “I’m so proud of the woman you’ve become, Maggie.
