“OK, I think he gets it,” hissed Nibs, returning to Maddy’s shoulder.

Maddy hoped the little cat was right. This could all go terribly wrong otherwise! As Ms Flint chatted away, Maddy invisibly stroked Star’s head . . . and then let her hand slide down to his collar. Very carefully she unsnapped his lead, holding it in place so that it wouldn’t drop to the ground just yet.

Just to make sure, she leaned down and whispered, “Star, will you come with me? Please? It’s for a really good reason.”

Star’s brown eyes seemed to meet hers, though Maddy knew that was impossible given that he couldn’t see her. Had the dog understood? Taking a deep breath, she grabbed his collar and let go of his lead. Now!

She dashed off, pulling Star along with her. To her relief, the golden retriever galloped readily at her side. They pounded together down the winding path, faster than Maddy had ever run before.
