Chapter 17
Sepheroth watched as the demons under his command gathered around him. Those in front avoided his eyes in case they incurred some particular form of torture he might be in the mood to dole out. Others shifted amongst the edges like feral animals, sensing the potential for violence, and waited to unleash their own brand of darkness that howled inside of them.
It was a constant battle for dominance and power, and those at the top never usually stayed there for long; but unlike many of his brethren, he had taken time to weave his threads of control amongst the hoard and had waited until he had enough strings to pull. Those who had the capacity to dethrone him had already been effectively neutralised, long before he stepped out of the shadows.
He slammed his fist down on his throne of bones, shattering the thick, yellowish fragments that his arm had rested on into hundreds of pieces.
The snarling and hissing silenced.
âThe Warden of Hell has held us here for far too long.â His deep voice resonated throughout the caverns, piercing the ears of all the inhabitants.
There was a resounding roar of agreement and insatiable anger. He silenced them again with a penetrating look from his crimson eyes.
âHe is not infallible, he is but one being. A Fallen,â he said with contempt. âAn angel from the Light who thinks he can rule us. He is powerful, but not without weaknesses.â His lips curled over the serrated edges of his teeth.
âOthers have tried before and failed. What makes you think you can do any better?â a hooded figure from the centre of the gathering interrupted. Sepheroth knew him instantly. Markos, the demon sorcerer.
His pale, white hands curled around a staff made up of bone and pieces of the dead. Markos had many dangerous abilities that had secured his position close to the top of the hoard. By choosing to stand in the centre, trapping himself in a circle of violence, he sent a message that he was either foolish or extremely deadly.
As Sepheroth leaned forward, the demons around Markos edged away. âOthers were impatient.â His eyes glowed with fire, âOur Warden is holding something of value within his domain. You have just volunteered to find out exactly how valuable.â
Markos straightened, holding his staff closer. A smoky haze formed around him, obscuring his form. âI did not say I was going to be part of your plans, Sepheroth. You do not rule me.â The circle around Markos became wider, except for one or two demons who stayed pointedly close. Interesting. It appeared this interruption had been planned, even anticipated.
âIf you are not with us, then you are of no use to me, sorcerer.â
Sepheroth didnât have to wait long. Five swirling dark orbs shot out towards him with deadly speed just as Markos disappeared into mist. Sepheroth stood up as they hit him, exploding dark fire against his skin and hitting the floor in a sizzling rain. He barely felt it. A demon launched out at him from the left, and he grabbed it by the throat.
