The celebration was as spectacular as always. Odron was a wealthy kingdom and its festivals reflected that, especially in the capital. Banners and streamers hung from every building, most depicting the blessed stag as a blue eight-point buck with a visible heart and pierced with an arrow. Lanterns with colored glass covers lit every street corner in a rainbow of light almost as bright as the noonday sun. Food stalls served every kind of delicacy, if mostly venison. Still, sweet pastries and other treats were plentiful once one became tired of meat. For every merchant selling foodstuff, there was one selling souvenirs for travelers or toys for children.

Down every main street marched a parade, led by troupes of entertainers. Minstrels, dancers, jesters, and far more were joined by revelers of all ages- and levels of sobriety- as they cavorted through the city. There was so much music and sound and light and joy that it all seemed to merge into one tidal wave of merriment.

Despite herself, Kistyn loved it.

She had started the evening as King Oshar’s guest of honor and had feasted with the nobility before being released to the greater public. It was always an honor to eat with the royal family, and King Oshar was a jovial sort, but she knew that wasn’t where she belonged. The king seemed to understand this and never kept any of the hunters from joining the festival as soon as propriety allowed.

It was known that the foreign female hunter had won the day, so any woman even slightly darker than the Odron average was being treated as a hero, and to free drinks. Kistyn took the offered mead without confirming or denying anything to the amusement of would-be fans. It was just after accepting another drink from a group of well-wishers that Kistyn heard her name above the din of the crowd.

“Kistyn! Kistyn!”

Turning to face the familiar voices, Kistyn broke out a huge grin. Jace and Isota pushed through the press of bodies until they reached her. Isota, ever enthusiastic, bounded up and jumped in Kistyn’s arms. Kistyn laughed and spun her friend in a circle before placing her back down.

“I’m so proud of you!” Isota squealed.

“Hey now,” Kistyn said, looking around. “I don’t need to get mobbed more than I already have. Let’s take this to the tavern, yeah?”

“Of course,” Jace said, clapping her on the back. “I wouldn’t mind getting a chance to sit down.”

The tavern in this case, The Silver Lute, was a favorite haunt of the trio, where they always met up for drinks and where Kistyn had a room when she was in town. She could have stayed in the castle-all of the hunters were offered accommodations-but Kistyn wasn’t sure if any of them actually accepted them. For her part, Kistyn felt stifled by the opulence of the castle, and nervous being surrounded by the nobility. Of
