Chapter 9

Jason and Liam had to work the next day, so Maddie and June headed in to see Blake and sign the papers for their new martial arts school. When they entered Blake’s office, the receptionist told them Blake was expecting them and to go on in.

Maddie knocked on Blake’s door and entered when he said 'come in'.

Blake looked up from his desk and smiled at them. “Hello. Where are your shadows?” he asked.

“Jason and Liam had to work at the logging site,” said Maddie, smiling back at him. “We wanted to get the papers signed for our school and gym.”

“I have everything ready,” said Blake, opening a folder. “Have a seat and you can look over the papers.”

Maddie and June sat in the chairs in front of Blake’s desk and each took some of the papers to look over. When each finished her papers, she switched and looked over the others. Maddie finished her papers and looked at Blake.

“It looks very straight forward to me. Of course, I know you will look out for me. What about the operating permits we will need?” she asked.

“They won’t be a problem. Rafe is head of the Chamber of Commerce. I have already sent him the papers needed to get your permits. He will look them over and send them to the proper departments. You should have them by the time the purchase is finalized.”

“Great,” said Maddie. “It helps to have family around.”

“Yes, it does, sometimes,” agreed June.

“That reminds me, June, I met your sister, Saturday,” said Blake. “I thought it was you at first. I went over to say hello and she told me she wasn’t you.”

“You met July?” asked June startled.

“Yes, at the seafood restaurant,” said Blake.

“I did not know she was in town,” said June.

“She said she was starting work at Dulcie’s hair salon today,” said Blake.

“I wonder why she picked here,” said June.

“Maybe she just wanted to be close to you,” said Blake.

“I don’t think so,” said June shaking her head.

She looked over at Maddie and found Maddie looking back thoughtfully. “Are you sure she did not know about you seeing Jason in the mirror?” asked Maddie.

“I don’t see how. I did not say anything about it to anyone. Besides, I did not know who he was, then. I sure did not know where he lived,” responded June.

“Jason and his crew delivered some logs in Denton not long ago. Maybe she saw him then,” said Maddie.

“Yes, the first time I talked to Jason in the mirror, he mentioned he had met July in Denton,” agreed June.

Blake followed this conversation before saying anything. “I take it, you and your sister are not close,” he said.

June shrugged her shoulder. “Not really, July steered clear of me for the last couple of years. She did not want to help me take care of Mom while she was sick. Maybe she has lightened up since Mom remarried and moved to Australia,” said June.

June did not want to get into her family history with Blake.
