The little boy was the cutest thing ever. I couldn’t get over how much he looked like Tasha with his brown eyes and the little frown he got when he was concentrating on playing the racing game he’d turned on. Ian looked just as serious where he sat beside the boy on the floor in front of the television with his controller clutched in both hands.

“What would you like to eat?” I asked them.

They both ignored me. Biting at the corner of my lip, I was getting ready to ask again when Tasha’s son let out a shout of pure triumph. He spared me a glance. “Grandma made me pancakes this morning. I ate the rest for lunch. I’m not hungry.”

“Didn’t you say you were sick yesterday?” Ian asked, turning to look at him, and then swore when the car he was steering veered off the track they were racing on with a spectacular, rainbow colored explosion.

The little boy shrugged his shoulders, their angles reminding me of Tasha again. “Yeah, but I’m fine now. Grandma says I have iron stomach. It’s genetic. Mom has it too.”

“Oh yeah? Well that’s not a real thing.” Ian fired back.

“Sure it is,” the kid answered just as smoothly, completely unconcerned about Ian’s sputtering. I laughed. The apartment was really clean, so my instinct to help somehow was thwarted by that. There wasn’t even a glass in the sink. All the furniture seemed to be some shade of cream or yellow, which reminded me a little of a hotel, but it was a lot nicer than my house. I wandered around and fluffed a pillow on the couch. After a few minutes the kid sat down his control with a wide grin and Ian swore under his breath, tossing his to the floor.

The little boy looked at him woefully. “We’re not allowed to throw things.”

“Well that’s bullshit.”

“Ian…”

“Mom says it’s rude to swear too and even though she does it I shouldn’t.” He eyed Ian up as if he wasn’t sure if he was above this rule or not.

Ian winked at me and I shook my head in exasperation. “It is rude. What’s your name anyway, kid?”

He sat up on his knees so he could stare directly into Ian’s eyes, and Ian rocked back a few inches, but didn’t get up. “Aiden. I’m bored. Take me to the park?” He put both his little hands on Ian’s face and shook it up and down. Ian laughed and carefully shoved him off.

I hesitated. We’d been planning on spending the morning with Tasha anyway, and, presumably, her son. “Do you think we should ask?” I shifted from foot to foot, looking back the hallway. Tasha hadn’t said anything, but she was really sick.

“Do you want to wake the she-dragon?”

“No.” I answered quickly.

Ian shrugged and shot me a wink that warmed my insides. Ever since we met up after work, I’d been feeling a little overwhelmed by him, would get this full body tingling from all the little things he did.
