The little boy was the cutest thing ever. I couldnât get over how much he looked like Tasha with his brown eyes and the little frown he got when he was concentrating on playing the racing game heâd turned on. Ian looked just as serious where he sat beside the boy on the floor in front of the television with his controller clutched in both hands.
âWhat would you like to eat?â I asked them.
They both ignored me. Biting at the corner of my lip, I was getting ready to ask again when Tashaâs son let out a shout of pure triumph. He spared me a glance. âGrandma made me pancakes this morning. I ate the rest for lunch. Iâm not hungry.â
âDidnât you say you were sick yesterday?â Ian asked, turning to look at him, and then swore when the car he was steering veered off the track they were racing on with a spectacular, rainbow colored explosion.
The little boy shrugged his shoulders, their angles reminding me of Tasha again. âYeah, but Iâm fine now. Grandma says I have iron stomach. Itâs genetic. Mom has it too.â
âOh yeah? Well thatâs not a real thing.â Ian fired back.
âSure it is,â the kid answered just as smoothly, completely unconcerned about Ianâs sputtering. I laughed. The apartment was really clean, so my instinct to help somehow was thwarted by that. There wasnât even a glass in the sink. All the furniture seemed to be some shade of cream or yellow, which reminded me a little of a hotel, but it was a lot nicer than my house. I wandered around and fluffed a pillow on the couch. After a few minutes the kid sat down his control with a wide grin and Ian swore under his breath, tossing his to the floor.
The little boy looked at him woefully. âWeâre not allowed to throw things.â
âWell thatâs bullshit.â
âIanâ¦â
âMom says itâs rude to swear too and even though she does it I shouldnât.â He eyed Ian up as if he wasnât sure if he was above this rule or not.
Ian winked at me and I shook my head in exasperation. âIt is rude. Whatâs your name anyway, kid?â
He sat up on his knees so he could stare directly into Ianâs eyes, and Ian rocked back a few inches, but didnât get up. âAiden. Iâm bored. Take me to the park?â He put both his little hands on Ianâs face and shook it up and down. Ian laughed and carefully shoved him off.
I hesitated. Weâd been planning on spending the morning with Tasha anyway, and, presumably, her son. âDo you think we should ask?â I shifted from foot to foot, looking back the hallway. Tasha hadnât said anything, but she was really sick.
âDo you want to wake the she-dragon?â
âNo.â I answered quickly.
Ian shrugged and shot me a wink that warmed my insides. Ever since we met up after work, Iâd been feeling a little overwhelmed by him, would get this full body tingling from all the little things he did.
