There was no polite way to get out of this, so the only option was to endure it. They’d be called to the stage soon. Ross’s arm around her waist made her want to gag, though.

She zoned out as the guys made idle chit-chat. There were no girls in this friend group. It wasn’t usually a problem, but they were discussing work and someone to make polite side conversation with would be nice.

Kirsty smiled and nodded in what she hoped were the right places. It was so noisy, so muggy, that her brain had no more room for deciphering what was being said.

She could have jumped for joy when Izzy appeared.

‘Kirsty, can we have a chat?’ She turned to Ross. ‘Girl problems.’

Ross’s arm didn’t move. He looked at his watch. ‘Can it wait? We’ll be on stage soon.’

‘Not really,’ Izzy said. Her face was stoic, but Kirsty knew her well enough to catch the flicker of annoyance in her eyes.

She wriggled free. ‘I won’t be long. I’ll get you by the stage in five.’

He furrowed his brow. ‘Don’t be late.’

Wow. She’d leave it to the last minute, just to wind him up. Who did he think he was?

Izzy took her hand and led them through the crowd. Kirsty took a deep breath when they finally exited the tent.

‘Thank you,’ she said to Izzy as they found a spot by the railings.

‘Figured you wouldn’t want to be left alone too long.’

‘Where’s Rhona?’

Izzy bit her lip, cutting short a smile. ‘She went off with Dani and Trip.’

‘And what’s that look for?’ Kirsty asked, masking her uneasiness with a laugh.

‘You really like her.’

‘No I don’t.’ Internally, she scolded herself. It was a knee-jerk reaction and one she gave into far too quickly.

‘You do. It’s cute. I’ve never seen you like this.’

She chose to ignore her. ‘How is Dani? She’s been in a mood all day.’

‘Same. Worse. Dunno. I think Trip is keeping a close eye on her.’

Kirsty nodded. Ashley might be Dani’s best friend, but Trip was a close second. She could be on stage and not worry about her little sister. Otherwise, there was a good chance she’d be glued to the bar. ‘I’d better go soon – can’t be arsed with Ross getting nippy with me.’

‘He seems charming, by the way.’

‘Tell me about it.’
