“I’m Reed Masterson,” I replied with a smile as I shook Chuck Scully’s hand. “It’s nice to meet you.”

We were standing in the lobby of Butch’s Gym in downtown Queen’s Landing, and Mr. Lord had just introduced me to his closest friend.

Chuck’s handshake was firm, but his brown eyes were mildly confused. With a shaved head and a large brow, Chuck was a good-looking guy. He stood maybe five-ten, and his body was muscular and stout. Previously, Trevor had told me that Chuck was 44 or 45—I couldn’t remember exactly. Like Mr. Lord, he’d been in the military— the Navy, to be specific—so they had a lot in common. After retiring from the Navy, Chuck was now a police officer.

“Ole Trevor said you were in college here in town,” he said, sizing me up.

“Yeah, I’m a Junior.”

Chuck looked over at Mr. Lord and then back at me. His face was still puzzled. “So, you two are friends?”

“Yeah,” Mr. Lord put his arm around my shoulders. “After the break-up, the boy here has been there for me. He’s an awesome kid.” He smiled down at me, and my face reddened. Trevor was fucking with both of us. “We hang out, male bonding, beers, bondage—ya know, just usual shit.”

I was so stunned that he’d slipped in the word bondage that I wanted to hide under a yoga mat…

“Did you say—”

Mr. Lord cut him off. “Let’s go get this shit done,” he said to Chuck, changing the subject. “So, is your rotator cuff still acting up on ya?” They started to walk away.

“Well, uh, he stammered, “uh, a little.”

Trevor looked over his shoulder at me and winked. “See ya in a bit, son.”

Gaping at him, I watched as they walked toward the free weights, and I couldn’t help but grin from Mr. Lord’s cheeky performance in front of Chuck.
