RORY ALLOWED HERSELF ONE YAWN, but the minute she turned the key to her apartment, all fatigue deserted her body. The sweet scent of vanilla wafted from the bathroom. Candlelight sparkled from votives on the coffee table, throwing a golden glow about the room, broken only by shafts of crimson sparkling through two goblets filled with red wine. Music teased her—something jazzy, but soft, instrumental—playing in the other room. Her bedroom?

She snagged a glass of wine, sipped, tensing with the awareness that Alec was already here, somewhere in her apartment. Ready to help her bring her fantasy to life. Ready to show her what she’d been missing all these years or, more accurately, ready to watch her show herself.

His presence thrummed through her to the same beat of her own need. Insistent, rhythmic—like the bass guitar at the dive of a bar on the south side.

Here, in her warm, comfy apartment, the quiet intensified the throbbing pulse. She dropped her purse on the couch and inhaled. The acrid scent of cigarette smoke and stale air clung to her clothes, her hair, masking the vanilla sweetness she knew the candles emitted. Yet soon she’d be washed clean. Renewed. Reinvigorated.

“Alec?”

He didn’t answer, but appeared wordlessly in the doorway between the bathroom and the living room. He wore a white T-shirt and worn denim jeans that molded to his body in all the right places—his thighs, his hips, his crotch. Even in the dim light, she could see his hardness, from his cock to his abs and his chest. Tension crackled like powder on fire.

“Sorry I’m so late,” she said, her voice raspy, sore from shouting over the music to converse with Cecily and Vince, who’d stuck around to check out the action. All night long, Rory had been keenly aware of Vince’s dark eyes trained on her, of the way he’d cupped her elbow when they’d entered the bar, of the way he’d seemed interested in everything Cecily told him about her, since she’d had no interest in telling him herself. Yes, Vince was good-looking, polite. Funny, even. Close to her own age, similarly educated with course work at junior college and loads of work experience. Trying to find his place in the world—though he’d previously dedicated himself not so much to family, as she had, but to the family business.

While she’d enjoyed Cecily and her cousin’s company, her mind had wandered almost exclusively to Alec—the academic who would always have more book-born knowledge than she ever would, the traveler who’d studied and explored on all four borders of the United States when she’d never left Illinois. The man who’d made love to countless women, making her wonder why the heck he was interested in her.

But he was. He wanted her. Evidence of his interest glimmered in the candlelight, flavored the wine he’d selected and poured. All for her. All for tonight.

“I don’t think it’s possible to be late for your own seduction,” he assured her.

She smiled, relaxed, catching the gleam of humor in his eyes.
