We ordered pizza and put on Groundhog Day. Weston sat on the couch while I sat on the floor in front of it. He didn’t laugh once, and toward the end of the movie, he fell into an exhausted sleep.

I shut off the TV and gently eased him to lie down. Carefully, I lifted one of his legs at a time, then went to get the high-tech blanket he wore to improve circulation. I guess it was working because his calf muscle under my hand still felt strong and whole.

“You are strong and whole,” I whispered, covering him up. “More than you think.”

Even in sleep, his brows were furrowed. I stroked his head until they smoothed out, thinking of a different couch. Weston and I kissing and touching, his body strong and powerful over mine. The strength in how he moved, and the power in his gaze. It stirred my blood. Even after all this time, my mouth could still taste his kiss and my ears remembered the way he said my name as if it were a wish or a prayer.

I pushed down a jagged lump of complicated emotions, shouldered my purse, and quietly went out.
