The Story of Morning Glory
.
IT WAS EARLY MORNING, and Onion had been up for some time waiting for Little Garlic to wake up. He had been thinking of sharing a story from his travels with Pumpkin.
Little Garlic opened his eyes and saw Onion was wide awake. âGood morning, Onion.â
âGood morning, little fella. How did you sleep last night?â
âI really slept well. I think I had a lot of dreams.â
âDo you remember any of your dreams?â
âI know they were about secrets, but I canât remember them.â
Onion wondered if Secret Star had somehow come to Little Garlicâs dreams. He decided that maybe if he shared the story of Morning Glory with Little Garlic, the little fella might remember his dream.
âYou know, little fella, thereâs a secret that very few humans have discovered. Most humans just donât even think that it applies to them.â
âWhat is this secret, Onion?â
âThe story that Iâm about to share with you is very special. Would you like to hear it?â
âYes, Onion. I really would.â
âWhy donât we sit here in this beautiful field of flowers and look at their beauty and see how the rays of the sun are gently caressing them, preparing them for the day.
âDuring my travels with Pumpkin, Magic Wind took us to a village where all the villagers had gathered in front of a flower. They all looked very sad.
âAs we were watching, a little boy stopped by and asked why they were so sad.
âOne of the villagers told him that they were sad because their beloved flower hadnât opened its petals for days, and they were worried that it was sick, or even worse, that it had died.
ââIâm best friends with the flower,â said the little boy, âand weâre always talking together and sharing secrets. Please let me through, so that I can go and speak with her and see whatâs going on.â
âHearing the words of the boy, the crowd moved aside to let him go up and stand close to the flower.
âTo the little boyâs dismay, he saw that his friend looked very ill. He had never seen her this way before. He couldnât believe his eyes. He stepped closer and closer and put his ear right next to his friend. Seeing how sad she looked, he started crying and whispering to his friend, âMorning Glory, Morning Glory, whatâs going on, whatâs happened to you? Please wake up, please wake up. Itâs me, your friend.â
âNot a word was heard. Not even a whisper.
âThe little boy wouldnât stop crying. No one could calm him. No one could comfort him.
âNow it had become dark, and the villagers had gone home. The boy didnât budge and continued to stand close to Morning Glory, tears rolling down his face, whispering words of endearment to his friend.
âAbove, the sky was filled with stars. The little boy was so very sad, wishing there was more he could do to comfort his friend. As he looked up at Venus shining bright in the sky, he began to pray very hard for his friend.
