Childhood immunisation
Immunisation is when vaccines are used to protect people from diseases.
Vaccines contain either very small, weakened parts of the virus or bacteria that cause the disease or small parts of the toxins the virus/bacteria produce. These minute parts have been treated to prevent the disease from occurring, but they make the body produce the relevant antibodies to protect against the disease.
Because babies and young children are particularly vulnerable to these diseases they are given a programme of immunisations very early in life. The immunisations will protect children from the diseases and prevent the disease from being passed to others if it does occur. Children who are not immunised are more at risk of contracting the disease.
Below is the immunisation schedule for children up to the age of 5.
