BEING MORE CONSULTATIVE: CASE EXAMPLES OF ACTIVISTS’ ORGANIZATIONAL EFFORTS

This chapter ends by exploring five illustrations of activists’ organizational efforts to be more consultative with affected constituencies facing ecological and social challenges. In the first example, Helen describes how she and a forest ecological group had to backtrack. In developing an ecological initiative, they forgot to consult with the First Nations community in the area. In the second example, Irene tells her story of bringing two sets of citizens together—one group wanting to send their toxic waste to a northern community, the other group comprised of citizens who would be on the receiving end of these radioactive nuclear tailings.

In the third account, Serren tells the story of how, in listening to the perspectives of local residents, her organizational project was able to reach community members more effectively. In the last two examples, Jack relates moving himself and his organization to start exploring the concept of transition planning in shifting from “dirty to clean industry.” Kathleen, in turn, outlines the shifts in her organization's consultations with the labor sector over time.
