A Special Library’s Approach to Knowledge Management

The American Legion is a membership-based veterans’ service organization founded in 1919 and currently comprised of nearly two million members. American Legion Library and Museum (ALLM) functions as a division of The American Legion’s national headquarters, which numbers around 300 staff. ALLM has three responsibilities: (1) maintaining the corporate library and archive, (2) overseeing the museum, and (3) supporting the administrative policy-making processes of the larger organization. As of 2018, ALLM had six full-time employees providing services to members, staff, and the general public. As the center for The American Legion’s history and memory, ALLM offers primary and secondary sources in a variety of formats. The Digital Environment Reorganization Project grew out of ALLM’s Archives Outreach Initiative (AOI) to increase its own visibility within the organization by meeting with staff from across The American Legion and emphasizing ALLM’s role as a repository for the larger organization’s physical and digital holdings.
