The food was good and the company enjoyable but the sense of being loved, of belonging, was even better. Parker slipped out of one warm embrace into another. Jessie and Annie werenât blood but they were her family and had been as long as she could remember. She couldnât imagine what her life wouldâve been like if Jessie hadnât rescued her five-year-old self. She smiled thinking about the story he liked to tell of him as a new police officer in Harlem, seeing her little legs sticking out of a garbage can. Sheâd been stuck headfirst because she was looking for food. That was the beginning. Then Annie came along. If it wasnât for them she would have been left with her alcoholic, always drunk, grandmother, fending for herself on the streets. Her grandmother officially had custody but she lived with them. It wasnât until they tried to adopt her that they learned upcoming Harlem attorney Aloysius T. Parker was her uncle. He fought for legal custody and won. Jessie and Annie were granted limited visiting rights. Happily, it turned out her blood relative didnât really want her and as long as she did well in school she was free to stay with Jessie and Annie whenever she liked.
She kissed Annieâs cheek. âIâll try to make it again next week. I love you both.â
She took a few seconds on the front porch, inhaling the crisp March evening air, trying to hold on to the warmth of the visit. Coming here was always the right thing. She pulled her keys out of her coat pocket and headed to her car at the curb. But before she could click the remote to open the car doors, something hit her hard from the side, throwing her down on the ground. She was yanked up, punched in the stomach, then in the face. She gasped for air.
âUppity black bitch.â
There were two of them, heavily muscled bruisers with masks. Bastards. She grabbed a fist coming at her, pushed away the arm it was attached to and not realizing she was still grasping her keys, swung her fist.
âFuck. The bitch stabbed me.â He stumbled away.
Taking advantage of the distraction, she kicked the knee of the other man standing there. He swore as he went down. She unbuttoned her coat but before she could draw her Glock, an arm wrapped around her neck from behind and jerked her off her feet. Fuck. He was huge and her feet were dangling. She kicked back but couldnât seem to connect. She grabbed his arm with both hands, trying to free her neck to breathe but he easily pulled her right arm down between them. Go for his eyes. She raised her left arm, trying to scratch his eyes but he tipped his head back and her nails scraped his face and neck.
As he slowly cut off her air, he pulled her right arm up. The pain was unbearable. She tried to scream but no sound came out. She heard a snap.
