Chirping birds sounded through the window, and Vianna cracked an eyelid. Supplies from making the talisman littered the floor, and a small cone of sunlight reflected off the glass bottles on the corner shelves, creating bursts of violet and indigo across her arm. She peeled her face from the floorboards and poked at the indents in her cheek.
Her body had shut down. That happened after so long without sleep. She couldnât pass out at night while in bed. Oh no. That would be too easy. When she moved to get up, a sharp jab of pain sliced through her upper back from being slumped over. Light caught the cinnabar of the ring-turned-talisman on the floor. She picked it up, expecting a ghost to pop up or some magical jolt to race through her body, but nothing happened. Slipping the ring on, she stumbled upright and stretched her back, making it pop.
Once she got her stiff joints moving, she briskly walked down the hallway and into the kitchen for a hot drink and to check her phone. She opened the cupboard and saw a chipped clay mug with a shiny white sheen, and she paused mid-grab.
The morning before she ran, sheâd argued with Mother over that exact mug. Mother insisted broken things belonged in the trash, and Vianna felt trash was code. Sheâd felt certain her mother could toss her into the trash as easily as a chipped mug, but there it sat on the shelf, never actually tossed.
The crap clearance coffee was in the pantry, and she poured some into the mug, mixing it with water, then sliding it into the microwave. She drummed her fingers against the kitchen counter as she waited. The grimoire offered no details on what happened after the spell for the talisman, but Vianna had slept nightmare-free. Although, that could have just as easily been coincidence. Looking down at her finger, she twirled the red-stone ring that now sat beside the infinity loop ring. The microwave dinged.
She took a quick sip of coffee without letting it cool and sputtered it back out, spilling some down her shirt. Sheâd burned her tongue. Pulling her shirt away from her skin so that it didnât burn her, she noticed the state of her clothes. She was still coated in muck from the heist at the cemetery. The squeaky faucet in Nancyâs bathroom turned on, pouring water, then turned off. Vianna tightened her grip on the mug, flexing the edges of her mouth downward in a scowl. There was no way she could leave Salem before finding Nancyâs hand and putting her to rest. She couldnât exactly herald spirits into some bright light or anything, but she could use the hand to banish her ghost from the house and release Nancy from a horrid death loop.
Grandma appeared at Viannaâs side. âThe coven mother is coming. Tidy yourself so you look a smidgen less like a homeless vagrant.â
Grandma excelled at pointing out the obvious, but Vianna didnât give a goatâs ass what Grandma or the coven mother thought about her appearance.
