She looked away from him as she felt exposed with all her thoughts being open to Demetri. She kept looking down, processing how this would affect her, and them. Demetri stayed respectfully quiet, to Ava’s surprise. He was clearly waiting for her to speak to him. Respecting the privacy of her head.

“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?” she asked. Honestly, it was really starting to annoy her how he always seemed to have the upper hand in their relationship. Constantly withholding information making jusgement calls on what he felt she could and could not handle.

“I didn’t really know if it was real or if I was going crazy. It has never been as clear as it is at the moment.” His posture hadn’t relaxed because he rightly knew that even though Ava was trying to pretend that she was calm about this new development in their relationship, the truth was, this was making her want to run.

“I don’t know how to react to this or to our bond. I just don’t know how to process this. Should I be happy that I know there is someone made for me? Or should I be upset that the choice was taken away from me? Should I be pleased that you will be able to know my needs before I can voice them? Or, is that an invasion of privacy and another way in which my choices are taken away from me?”

Ava’s words tumbled out in a gush. Demetri knew they were coming. He knew that this idea of losing her free will was the scariest thing in all of this to Ava. Still that knowledge didn’t make hearing her say it out loud any less painful.

“I don’t need this bond to tell me, that if I had a choice I would choose you,” he said with conviction.

Ava took another step back. She could feel his hurt as if it was her own and she couldn’t stop the tear that slowly fell down her face as she felt she had failed him, again.

“I don’t think I could stay away from you,” she said honestly. She fought the urge to take another step away from him.

“But if you could, you would?” Demetri asked brokenly. He knew it was unfair to push her in this moment. He hadn’t let her process the new development in their bond, and he was pushing her to react the way he had. He liked that it brought them closer. He would never admit this out loud. She was like a drug. He felt like he would always want to be closer to her no matter how connected they were.

Ava stayed silent. She couldn’t think. She was panicking. She was afraid that every thought she had he would hear. She could see that she was hurting him. The truth was if she could walk away from him, and the terrifying bond they shared, she couldn’t say if she would or wouldn’t.

“Ava, if you could walk away from me, from our bond, would you?” Demetri demanded in a sharp commanding voice.
