Wilbur sent two constables out to the dredge. Then he secured a search warrant, and he, Bonnie, and Constable Kuptana headed for Jake Hitchcock's house. They announced themselves and pounded on the front door. No answer. Kuptana pounded again. Finally it was answered by a brunette whose garish, polyester bathrobe was open to the navel. She reeked of perfume and alcohol. "Whadya want?" she muttered.
"Where's Jake?" asked Wilbur.
"Sleeping."
"Get him."
"He'll be pissed. Who are you, anyway?" she asked, even though the RCMP insignia was visible on all of them.
"Mounties. Get him now!"
She closed her robe and muttered, "Oh, shit." She turned on her heel and headed for a closed door.
They could hear her trying to rouse Jake and then heard him bellow, "What the fuck!" It was quiet for a long time and then the bedroom door opened a crack; Hitchcock stuck his head out. "Why are you here? I ain't done nothin'."
"You're under arrest."
"What the hell for."
"Assault and kidnapping.
The door slammed shut. When it opened again, Jake grabbed the woman and shoved her into the living room. One arm encircled her neck. In the other hand he held a Colt revolver, which was pointed at her temple. She was sobbing. Her robe had come open and one ample breast peeked out
"Let me leave and I won't shoot her," Hitchcock said with his teeth clenched.
The woman tried to look up at Jake. "You wouldn't shoot me, baby. You love me," she whispered.
Jake sneered. "Lanie dear, you're just another piece of ass to me." He released her neck and grabbed her around the waist.
With that the woman slumped on his forearm. As he tightened his grip on her sternum, she jerked her left hand up upward and poked Jake in the eye with one sharp, red finger nail. He screamed. His grip on both the gun and the woman loosened. She swatted the gun out of his hand and kicked it out the front door. It clattered down the steps. Then Lanie bolted. Her robe billowed behind her as she ran down the street. Jake covered his eye with his hand. Blood seeped through his fingers.
"She blinded me," bellowed Jake. "That bitch blinded me."
Hitchcock was handcuffed and dragged to the patrol car in a matter of minutes. Rogers turned in the passenger seat and looked hard at him. "Where the hell did you get that gun?" Ownership of handguns was severely restricted in Canada.
"Fuck you," said Jake.
"Would you like to know how we learned about your victim?" Hitchcock said nothing.
"She escaped."
Jake inhaled sharply. He looked confused. "No. No. She couldn't have. That place was air tight."
"And now we have a confession," said Bonnie.
