Relationship of POXC to Crop Yield and Productivity

Soil health indicators that are related to crop productivity are of great interest to farmers. There are several reports of positive relationships between POXC and crop productivity. Weil et al. (2003) reported a positive relationship with POXC and corn dry matter yield (R 2 = 0.4). This has been supported by several other studies (e.g., Culman et al., 2013; de Moraes Sá et al., 2014; Majumder, Mandal, Bandyopadhyay, & Chaudhury, 2007; Stine & Weil, 2002), although sometimes those relationships were no stronger than the crop yield response to total SOC (Lucas & Weil, 2012). When regression analysis has been used with multiple soil health indicators, POXC has sometimes, but not always, been selected as being related to yield (Hurisso et al., 2016; Sprunger et al., 2019). However, one study of 29 replicated field trials across the midwestern United States showed that—independent of the relationship with SOM content—POXC was an effective soil health metric for predicting crop productivity across the Corn Belt (Wade, Culman, et al., 2020). Presumably there is a suite of direct and indirect mechanisms responsible for the overall positive relationship between POXC and crop productivity, but most are probably site specific and will require independent validation to advance our understanding.
