We went to the outpatient clinic on the floor below. He walked ahead humming, and I followed him nervously. This was officially the start of my training in psychiatry in a busy Melbourne hospital.

Box Hill Hospital gave me an impression of a place where many people came to seek help from experts in their fields. I saw signs pointing towards many specialist departments in the hospital, and I felt grateful for getting a chance to learn here even for a couple of months. I wanted my name to be among those specialists.

Dr Chambers told me on the way that he would prefer to discuss each case after I have seen the person and before making a decision to treat him or her. This was absolutely fine with me. I wanted to pay attention to details without having any prior assumptions.

Little things can be so valuable and tell you a lot about someone. Dr Chambers always encouraged me to dig deep and explore other possibilities before making a diagnosis and treatment plan. And for that I had to be a good listener with a great deal of patience. I did exactly what my boss told me, but I also applied my own thinking occasionally. Sometimes he approved it, and sometimes he rejected it, but he always liked the fact that I had formed an opinion.

My first patient was a man who had suffered a serious injury in his childhood from a cricket ball. This man had developed a fear of any round shape that looked remotely like a cricket ball. He didn’t even want to watch cricket matches, but he was still fond of the

game.

‘Please take a seat, sir. How do you feel today?’
