The two demon hunters walked back out to the waiting Mustang. Robert wasn’t sure exactly how successful their visit was. Judging by the concerned look on his friend’s face, he assumed it went better than expected.

“So, Whaddya think?” Robert asked after they got back in the car. Johann looked over at him as they pulled away from the parking space.

“I think we’re in for a hell of a fight, that’s what I think,” Johann answered.

“You think this guy’s the demon?”

“Nope. Not at all. It’s his partner who’s the demon.”

“That Bune guy? What makes you think that?” Robert asked, confused.

“That badly drawn cow, as you put it, wasn’t a family crest. The thing he had framed on the wall—that was a sigil. That asshole is being pretty blatant about where his allegiance lies.”

“What’s a sigil?” Robert asked.

“A sigil is a demonic symbol, used to conjure a demon. Every demon has its own sigil. Even angels have sigils. I’ll tell you something else—those words that were written under the sigil weren’t a family moto either.” Johann said, his jaw tightening.

“What were they?”

“That was Bune’s enn,” Johann answered. Robert looked at him, blankly. Johann could see his friend had no idea what he was talking about. “An enn is the spell used to conjure a demon. In this case, the demon being conjured would be Bune. If that guy has the sigil and the enn framed like that, he must really be worshiping this thing. This bond is gonna be hard as hell to break.”

“That’s not a good thing,” Robert said, a concerned look on his face.

“No. Not a good thing at all. If this guy’s partner is Bune, we have a big issue. Bune is nasty. He’ll bestow wealth upon a person—for a price,” Johann said.

Robert looked over at him. It didn’t take a genius to know that they were in for a terrible battle.

“I’m guessing the price would be the conjuror’s soul?” Robert asked.

“Exactly,” Johann said. Robert knitted his brow.

“But—” started Robert.

“I know,” interrupted Johann, “he didn’t act like he was possessed. We’ve gotta find out what gives here.”

“Is that normal? For someone who’s possessed to act like they’re not?” asked Robert. Johann shot him a glance.

“Sure. It happens all the time. You can’t always tell from talking to someone if they’re possessed or not. Oh, sure, you can get vibes—but unless their eyes go black, you wouldn’t know for sure. A demon can make you believe you're talking to someone who’s perfectly normal…the most angelic person you ever met…when they’re really possessed as all hell, and they’re about to tear your heart out of your chest,” Johann answered.

“That sucks,” Robert said.

“Tell me about it.”

The demon hunters arrived back at the motel and got straight to work on some research. They needed to try and find out what the best way would be to vanquish the demon Bune. They sat at the table and opened their laptop computers. Johann went to the refrigerator and took out two cans of beer, one for him and one for Robert.
