âBut if heâs known as anything, itâs asâ¦â
Then the god spoke, his voice still imbued with that liveliness, that extra zest that had been so absent in the past few days. âThe Lord Vishnu sends me,â he said, âTo announce that Parashuram, the sixth avatar of the Lord, will not be resurrected.â
There was a thump, as if Abhayâs heart thudded with one, final, beat, before going into silence.
âUnlessâ he added, Abhay still a tableau of shock, âHis son atones for sins committed in a past life, something which he may achieve by coming forth and prostrating himself before my feet; for I am the foremost devotee of Him who rules over the Universe.â
In that quiet, mountains could almost be heard eroding, tectonic plates sliding, as a heart stunned by deathly tidings moved, straining to wrench free of this ice-cold chokehold and prepare the brain and muscles for action.
âThe god of trickery,â said Ira. Her voice in that moment was like the sudden shining of sprightly sunlight in the middle of a wrathful storm; so poorly understanding the mood, so out of place, and yet so soothing for the souls of those caught in the tempest.
âWhat?â asked Narada, and in that moment, Abhay saw that veneer of divinity, of wisdom, of calm, shift, and in its place was the stupefied expression of a self-proclaimed pro, beaten thoroughly by one whoâd known the game for three days.
Ira stood straighter, and Abhay saw a fire blaze in her eyes, face setting into an expression of confidence and knowingness. She wrapped her arm around the stunned Abhayâs shoulders, leaning her head on his. âParashuram is safe,â she said, glancing at his recently fallen but now restless eyes, before turning to Narada, as if her words were for him too.
âYou l...â Then she stopped. Every bit of her heart hungered for vengeance, smoldering with wrath, was on the verge of accusing this man of trickery, of duplicity, of manipulating the feelings of Abhay by resurrecting the specters of three days ago and letting them howl in and torment his mind; but something in her soul stopped her.
This feeling in her, as if infused into her bones or the core of her being, that she should tread with caution. Then, as if serving as an afterthought and maker of the thought at the same time, her mother spoke.
This is the foremost of all rishis, all sages. He has done penance to Lord Shiva and received great boons, and is now a steadfast follower of Lord Vishnu, who sent him here.
The pronouncement of the names of those divinities, those cosmic beings, those forces that shaped this Universe and controlled fate, silenced Ira, frozen as she contemplated what sheâd just heard.
At last, she looked at Narada not with an expression of fear or abhorrence, but of perception, of understanding, tinged with a sense of awe and expectance of a mortal about to hear the words of the Gods.
âHear me, o great Kalki,â he said, inclining his head, and placing his hand on his chest.
