LATER THAT EVENING, Sam threw a damp dish towel over his shoulder and rinsed out the sink. Wearily, he glanced around, glad that heâd gotten things cleaned up in a relatively short period of time. There was nothing worse than getting up in the morning and facing a sink full of dirty dishes.
The thought made him smile. Whoâd have thought that heâd reach a point where heâd actually take pride in the tidy appearance of the oversize kitchen? If his mother was still alive, sheâd get a kick out of this unexpected touch of domesticity in her rough-and-tumble son.
Not that he was bucking for the title of Martha Stewart of the North Country, Sam thought ruefully. When he and Prudie had first moved into the place, heâd felt a bit overwhelmed. Hell, truth be known, heâd been in way over his head. Five bedrooms, a country kitchen, three fireplaces, and he with an infant daughter and no wife.
But the house had come with the jobâone of the few perks the chief of police in the tiny town of Reflection Lake enjoyed. So over the years Sam and Prudie had settled into the old, rambling Victorian house on Main Street, making it home, and it wasnât long before Prudie dubbed it their rattle-trap shack, but Sam knew she loved every nook and cranny of the old place. If he ever quit the job as chief of police, he knew sheâd be heartbroken.
But Sam had no plans to quit. He liked the job and he liked the fact that his office was attached right to the house. A few steps down an enclosed walkway and he was at work, no need to get wet in a rainstorm or cold in the winter. When Prudie had been a baby it meant never being far from her. And now that she was older, it meant never having her far from his supervision, which, considering Prudieâs disposition, was a necessity.
Snapping a lid on a plastic container, Sam stuck the leftover meat loaf in the refrigerator. It would make a nice sandwich for tomorrowâs lunch. Especially with so much left, what with Prudie deciding during dinner that she was now a vegetarian and couldnât eat meat loaf or any other kind of meat ever again. Sam wondered what sheâd say at breakfast when she found out that bacon was meat.
He grinned and draped the towel over a nearby rack, careful to make sure that the hem matched the hem of the other towel on the rack. As he exited the kitchen he grabbed a bag of pretzels, flicked off the lights and walked to the bottom of the stairs. He listened.
Silence.
Relief washed over him. Apparently, Prudie had decided that sheâd challenged him enough for one day. Heâd already climbed the stairs five times to make sure she was tucked in and the TV was indeed off. He didnât doubt sheâd simply gone undercover, hiding beneath the sheets with a flashlight and her new Harry Potter book. But as long as she was quiet and the TV was off, Sam was satisfied.
