Zach came back to consciousness on fire. Everywhere. He coughed and gagged as hot, wet fire poured down over his back and chest. Sputtering and screaming, he tried to claw his way free.

His body shaking from shock, his skin burning, unable to see what would be the final death blow, Zach stayed silent, praying it would be over soon.

“Zach, snap out of it. You’re safe, man, you’re safe.”

It was a trick. That couldn’t be Quad talking to him. Zach would never be safe again. His life was over. He was going to die, and this was just another one of the Russian’s tricks.

Breathe. He just had to keep breathing through it. He just had to breathe, in and out, until it finally ended for him, until he was dead.

“Zach!” someone bellowed, and Zach twisted further. Pain hurtled up his groin and exploded into his stomach. He couldn’t let the man win, even if all Zach wanted to do was die.

Breathe.

Just fucking breathe.

“Zach, I promise you. You’re safe.”

A hand brushed over his cheek, a soft touch, a touch Zach hadn’t expected. A blow to the face, bolts of lightning shooting through his body, a cut, a kick, those he expected. But not this soft touch that made him whimper, made him shiver as he prayed this wasn’t another trick, that he’d really been rescued.

Zach’s trembling body went lax. Gagging, he turned his head and released a stomach full of spit and bile.

Dry heaving, tears streaming down his cheeks, Zach struggled to roll to his side. Sucking air in through his teeth and breathing out hard, labored breaths, he folded his body in half.

Breathe.

Just fucking breathe.

Gritting his teeth through the blinding pain, he searched for that soft touch, needing it desperately…
