The Mississippi River roared in front of us. I hated water more than I ever realized. The idea of getting on a boat to cross it made me sick, and I had no ginger candy to settle my stomach this time.
But I could see the land on the other side. It was not like the ocean. It would not take long to touch land again. I would be okay . . . especially since Joseph would be with me this time.
âThere is a bridge north of here, but it would take us too far out of the way,â I told Joseph as I looked at the map. âIt makes much more sense to go south and look for a boat to go across. We will need to go south eventually anyway.â
He chewed the grass and glared at me. His attitude made me want to laugh.
âGoing south means less traveling for you,â I explained. âI am putting my own desires aside to care for you and be more efficient. The least you could do is say thank you.â
He snorted, which was probably as close as I would get to appreciation. There was a hint of sarcasm in it, though.
âOkay, it is probably the latter, but you could at least be grateful that it benefits you,â I said as I petted his sleek body and packed up the map, getting ready to head south. âYou are a good boy. Do you know that?â
I could have sworn he smiled. He did know that.
âOf course you know that,â I said, giving him the last apple from the bag. âHow could you not know it when you are the best boy in the whole world?â
It made my heart hurt how much Joseph meant to me. I had never allowed myself to love something as much as I loved him.
He leaned his forehead into mine after he finished eating. It may have only been wishful thinking, but it seemed he felt the same way I did.
âHELP!â a woman yelled, cutting through the serenity of the forest. I was surprised I could hear her over the roaring river.
I swung myself up on Joseph, and we both craned our necks to hear which direction to go. I hoped she would scream again to give us a clue.
âHELP!â
She was east of us. Even though we had not backtracked toward the rising sun for one footstep of our journey, I pushed Joseph toward her with the same tenacity that I pushed him west.
We dashed toward her voice as quickly as we could. She looked about my age. A basket of apples was strewn about the scene, and she was fighting over her bag with a masked man.
She looked like she had already taken quite a beating, but she held firm and stood. I was proud of her for that. They were so engaged in their fight that I do not think either of them noticed me until I jumped off Joseph and tackled the man to the ground.
