Jamie slept soundly, her face resting against John’s chest as she relaxed in his arms. She mumbled something he couldn’t quite make out, but her accompanying kiss against his neck made him smile. She had accepted their destined mating. Something had happened in her mind when she had thought through what he had told her. Maybe someday she would share her thoughts with him, and he would know exactly what it was that made her understand that they were mates.

He softly stroked his hand through her hair, loving the feel of the long, silky tresses between his fingers. Her hair fell to the side over her shoulder, baring her back to him. He pushed aside her hair further and ran his hand down her torso, loving the soft sounds of contentment that escaped her. Leaning up, he kissed the top of her head before pulling back to look down at her. She turned her face to the left, hugging him tightly to her before settling back into slumber.

Jamie sighed against his chest, turning her face into his neck and kissing it lightly. John smiled at the way she burrowed herself against him. It was right. It was destined.

“Jamie,” he whispered against her temple.

“Mmmm?”

“Who do you belong to?”

She was quiet for so long, John was afraid she had fallen back asleep. He gently ran his hand down her back, content to hold her body against his.

“I belong to you, John,” she whispered against his chest.

Although spoken softly, he had heard her clearly. She had accepted him willingly. The Great Spirit would bless their mating. He just knew it.

“Yes, you do, Jamie. And I belong to you.”

“I’m glad.”

She smiled and turned to face him, opening her eyes slowly as she fought through the haze of sleep. She looked up at him quietly. He could see the confusion on her face and knew she had questions. But tomorrow would be soon enough to help her with any concerns that she had.

“Sleep, Jamie.”

He smiled and held her gently as she immediately settled against him and closed her eyes. He was content at her instant compliance and kissed the top of her head.

“That’s my girl,” he whispered, holding her loosely within his arms.

A soft golden glow suddenly appeared over the back of Jamie’s neck. Having never experienced the miracle of a mating, John could only watch in awe as the proof of the Great Spirit’s blessing permanently marked his mate. He slowly reached up and took hold of the thick cascade of her hair, gently moving it aside to expose the back of her neck. His chest tightened, and he smiled at the sight before him. Two entwined golden links now graced her beautiful skin just below her hairline. He knew without a doubt that when he looked in the mirror at his own neck, the same marking would be there.

“We’re mated now, Jamie,” he whispered against the top of her head as he pulled her tighter into his arms. “Our life together begins right now.
