Trumbull thought Reynolds was at least as shocked then as he had been by Reynoldsâs âbent tinâ criticism. More satisfying than that, West called the painting the âbest pictureâ ever done of a modern battle.
Abigail Adams, the wife of Massachusetts diplomat John Adams, saw the painting in London and was emotionally shaken by it. She had lived through the siege of Boston and knew many of the people Trumbull pictured. She wrote to her sister:
To speak of its merit I can only say that in looking at it my whole frame contracted, my blood shivered, and I felt a faintness at my heart. He is the first painter who has undertaken by his pencil those great actions, that gave birth to our nation.
