Chapter 9

Arabelle

A rabelle gasped as the front door swung in seconds before the chiming sound ended. She had just pressed the doorbell. She didn’t expect Gabe to already be at the entrance. She smiled, stretching the corners of her lips to match Gabe’s Cheshire cat-like grin.

“Hiya Belly,” he said. She thrust the wrapped present into his hands. “I didn’t think we were exchanging gifts yet?”

“Well, it’s almost Christmas, and I figured you needed something cheerful, so I brought your gift a little sooner than expected.”

“Cool,” he said. Her heart stuttered as he lowered his face to hers. He gave her an affectionate peck on the cheek and lifted back up. Shutting the door behind them, he quickly made his way over to a tall, brightly decorated Christmas tree next to the fireplace. She followed him, admiring the decorations and pointing out several that were collected either individually or from their combined adventures as they explored through several states. One of the things they loved doing together was traveling. Whenever she and Gabe had the chance to get away, they would. It was a major factor in why they were best friends. Plus, he was great company and fun to be with.

She slipped off her gloves and held her hands out in front of the crackling fire as he arranged the gifts she brought under the tree. Murmuring in delight, she wiggled her fingers and closed her eyes at the welcoming warmth. Then she flipped her eyes open and gasped. “Oh, I almost forgot.” Unhooking the white plastic bag from her right arm, she handed it to him. “Here’s dinner. Can you place it on the counter? I’ll gather the plates and utensils right after I warm up.”

Closing her eyes once more, she heard him shuffling toward the kitchen. She felt the warmth from his body; surround her back when he returned. His arms snaked around her waist, and his head rested on her shoulder. Something soft caressed her cheek and jingled by her ear. She giggled. Opening her eyes with a smile, she reached up to touch the familiar red, felt hat. Her hands smoothed over the material that ended with a gold-colored bell hanging from the tip.

“So, you’re Santa now?”

He winked. “Have you been naughty?”

“Not nice?” She laughed and pulled him closer, nestling into his strong arms with a wide grin. An overwhelming sense of joy warmed through her heart. She thrilled at his comforting hugs.

“I always love when you do that. Hug me from behind that is. I’ve really missed this.”

He squeezed her waist. “So have I.”

“Shall we eat?”

“In a minute. I want to enjoy this moment with you.”

She laid her head back against his shoulder, flicked the tips of her fingers across his bell, and caught the mischief in his eyes. Maybe it was his comforting warmth. Maybe it was the look in his eye that begged her for more. Whatever it was, she dropped her guard and did the unexpected. She tipped her head up toward him and let her heart take over.
