Anti-Jewish sentiments are continually on the rise both among the working class and the citizens. [â¦] Dangerous antisemitic views are being formed [â¦] Jewry itself is being assailed [â¦] Anti-Jewish sentiments are growing. Apart from calls to demote Jews from positions of responsibility, there are calls for the revision of their property.4
At first glance, the outbreak of antisemitism in postwar Czechoslovakia may be difficult to understand. Its logic, however, becomes apparent when seen it the context of the developments in the Soviet Union. Thus Czech historian Karel Kaplan goes as far as calling the Slánský trial a âSovietâ trial.5 This is not simply because it was directed from Moscow and orchestrated by Soviet advisors. The burst of a campaign against âZionismâ in a country, which had hitherto been Israelâs most active military ally of the Eastern bloc, was an acute reflection of the shifts in Soviet internal and international politics.
The present article sheds new light on the campaignâs anti-Jewish orientation by placing it within the context of the Soviet propaganda discourse of the time. Focusing on the analysis of the âenemy image,â the article explains how this image was loaded with meanings related to the notion of the âJew.â The analysis is conducted using the methodology of semiotic text analysis, which helps expose the semiotic character of the language of Soviet propaganda. Subsequently, the findings are compared with the Czechoslovak situation in the early Communist rule in order to demonstrate, how the image of the âJewâ as an âenemyâ helped in this context to secure important goals of Stalinâs foreign and domestic policies. The article documents the persistence of anti-Jewish sentiments in Eastern and East Central Europe after the Shoah, and the easiness with which the Communist regime â which ideologically was supposed to support the integration of the Jews â was willing to employ state-sponsored antisemitic campaign less than five years after the end of the war. The campaign was to shape the Jewish-Gentile relations in the region for decades to come.
