Chapter 11

Something Special

LEANING AROUND AMANDA, VICKI STARED in shock at the startled bay mare standing on the doorstep, watching them.

“Who’s she for?” Vicki asked in confusion, not quite sure how they could share their final present.

“She’s kind of ugly,” Amanda giggled as she reached up to stroke the pony’s forehead.

“What’s her name?” Kelly asked at the same time.

“Woah, calm down girls,” Dad laughed. “Give the poor pony some breathing room.”

“To answer your questions …” Mum began. “She doesn’t have a name and we bought her for Vicki, so she has a bigger pony ready when she outgrows Jackamo. So technically it’s a present for all three of you. Once Vicki’s trained her up she’ll move onto this pony, Kelly will get Jackamo and Amanda will take over Dandy.”

“Can I name her, then?” Vicki grinned, taking the lead rope her dad was holding out.

“You should name her Ugly Duckling,” Amanda said, laughing. “Look how huge her ears and legs are.”

“That’s awful,” Mum scolded her. “She’s only rising four years old, so I’m sure she’ll grow into herself in a couple of years.”

“She’s an Irish sport horse and bred for show jumping,” Dad said. “I have no doubt she’ll be something special one day.”

“Isn’t the Ugly Duckling actually a swan?” Kelly mused, trying to remember the fairy tale.

“Yes,” Vicki nodded, a smile spreading across her face. “That’s the perfect name for her.”

“You can’t call her Ugly Duckling!” Mum shook her head adamantly.

“No,” Vicki laughed. “Let’s call her Swanny, and Something Special as her show name. What do you think?”

There were grins on each of her family’s faces. It seemed their Christmas pony had a new name.
