“DON’T LOOK NOW, but somebody’s getting flowers, and I’ll bet a double mint mocha it isn’t me.” Jill stood on tiptoe to see over the espresso machine and out the front window of the coffee shop. A minute later, the door opened and a man in a Fran’s Flowers T-shirt came in carrying an arrangement of red roses. “Is there a Cannie Carmichael working here?” he asked.

“That’s Cassie. Cassie Carmichael,” Cassie said.

The man glanced at the card. “Looks like Cannie to me, but it’s your name, so I guess you know.” He held out the flowers. “Here you go.”

“Who are they from?” Jill slid over to her, eyes alight. “Read the card. Read the card.”

Cassie set the vase on the counter and unpinned the card from the ribbon. Her heart was racing. Had Guy really sent her roses? And what did it mean if he had?

She slid her thumb under the envelope flap and popped it open, then drew out a handwritten card. I’m the only man for you. Bob.

Jill was up on her toes again, trying to see over Cassie’s shoulder. “You don’t look too thrilled,” she said.

Cassie handed her the card. “They’re from Bob.”

“Bob?” Jill read the card. “What’s this ‘I’m the only man for you’ crap? Isn’t it supposed to be ‘you’re the only woman for me’?”

Cassie picked up the vase and headed toward the trash can. “Either way, the man’s delusional.”

“Wait, wait.” Jill snatched the vase from her hands as she was preparing to toss it in amongst the coffee grounds and sugar packets. “Just because they came from a creep doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy them. It’s not every day we get roses around this place.”

Jill put the rescued roses on a table by the window while Cassie tried to think what she’d say to Bob when he called. And he would call. He wouldn’t miss the chance to brag about his generosity and gloat over his supposed conquest. He probably thought all it took was a few flowers to send her running back to him.

“Uh-oh. Now this is interesting.”

Cassie followed Jill’s gaze out the window and her spirits plummeted. A second florist’s van was parked in the loading zone and a woman in a pink smock was headed their way.

“Bob must be desperate if he’s spending that kind of cash on you,” Jill said.

“Is there a Ms. Carmichael here?” The woman was almost hidden behind an arrangement of bright pink, orange and white flowers.

“I’m Cassie Carmichael.” Cassie stepped from behind the counter to accept the arrangement.

“What kind of flowers are those?” Jill asked.

“Daisies and passion flower.” The delivery woman smiled. “The customer was very specific.” She winked. “You are one lucky lady. I tell you, if I was ten years younger…” She waved and walked out the door.

Jill and Cassie exchanged glances. “That sure doesn’t sound like Bob,” Jill said.

“No, it doesn’t.” Cassie unpinned the card from the ribbon and brought it to her nose. Was her imagination working overtime, or did she detect
