‘Oh, really? You’ve kept that quiet!’ Mabel laughed.

‘No! I mean Posy!’ he said, flapping the journal at her. ‘Listen …’

I have some exciting news. Monsieur Manoff came to me after rehearsals the other day and said, ‘Posy!’ … He speaks very dramatically in his French accent if you can imagine it. ‘I am taking this company to America. Before that happens, you will be dancing for me. I plan two new ballets written specially for you.’ Isn’t it marvellous? Two new ballets written specially for me! Can you quite believe it! Pauline, you’re the reason I am here. If you hadn’t signed that Hollywood contract and used the money to send me to Czechoslovakia, there’s no way I’d be dancing in two ballets of my own and heading for New York. I’m scared I didn’t express my gratitude enough when we were in London. I fear I behaved in a rather spoilt way, but I hope you agree that it is never too late to mend one’s wicked ways. Thank you, dearest sister, from the bottom of my heart. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
