âJust let him fall the other way when he goes,â her mother murmured into her own cocoa.
âYeah,â Cameron agreed.
âThatâs what happens when you chop the old places down,â Hannah said.
Her mother chuckled. âAnd just where would you propose all these people live?â she asked, gesturing toward their neighbors. âThings have to change sooner or later. Thereâs no stopping that.â
Hannah frowned. âYeah, I know, butâ¦but donât you think that a lot of times when they change, they get less⦠lessâ¦â She flailed her hand around, not coming up with the right word.
âMaybe justâ¦less?â Cam suggested. âI kinda get what you mean. Itâs hard for kids like us to picture this whole huge neighborhood belonging to just one family. Itâs hard to imagine the woods without bike trails and graffiti. It just seems like back then it was âmore.ââ
âThatâs totally what I mean,â Hannah agreed. âThe forest was more magical, because people hadnât ripped it all up and there was more space for people to do amazing things, âcause there werenât so many people around. When you and the neighbor guy, Trevor, were talking, you said that John D. Hare was an Oregon congressman and a senator. He did big things. He could be special.â
He could be a hero. Just like in the poem.
When their mother laughed, she sounded a little sad. Hannah knew then that her mother and brother understood the weird, achy longing in her chest.
âYeah,â her mother murmured. âSometimes it seems like the world was big enough for heroes back then. And now it is all chopped up into tiny little pieces. Too many people, too little room for anyone to be somebody special anymore. Thereâs an old saying, âWhen everybodyâs special, nobodyâs special.â But who really wants to be ordinary?â
