Plettenberg Bay and Tsitsikamma
Thirty km (18 miles) east lies Plettenberg Bay ⁄ [map], a beautiful spot spoilt only by the hideous modern hotel built near the beach. It is a fashionable resort with safe bathing, and consequently gets very crowded in high summer. At the south of the bay, the scenic Robberg Peninsula, where you can see seals, dolphins and whales, is protected in the Robberg Nature Reserve (8am–5pm; www.capenature.co.za). A round walk to the furthest end of the peninsula takes about four hours.
A large number of dolphins make ‘Plett’ their home year-round. Boat trips around the bay run from the beach, and Ocean Blue Adventures (tel: 083-701 3583; www.oceanadventures.co.za) offers an informative excursion. The experience of being in a small boat with dolphins playing in the waves, so close that you could touch them, is incredible. Between August and November there is also a good chance of seeing whales, and you can get updates on their presence from the Tourism Bureau (tel: 044-533 4065, www.plett-tourism.co.za) on Main Street.
The strikingly beautiful Tsitsikamma section of the Garden Route National Park (gates open 7am–7pm; www.sanparks.org) encompasses hardwood forests, sparkling pools, coral reefs, dunes, long stretches of sandy beach with swimming spots, deep gorges, waterfalls and the Otter Trail, one of the most popular hikes in the country. One of the world’s highest bungee jumps is also here. Those adventurous enough to leap off Bloukrans River Bridge (www.faceadrenalin.com) have a 216m (708ft) fall before they are snapped back up again. The many other adventure activities in the forests and ravines include “kloofing” (canyoning, a mix of swimming, hiking and rappelling) and kayaking.
