DAILY BRIEFING, APRIL 25th
Laurie stands up to the podium, her notes laid before her. The ASL interpreter stands off to her left. A voice in her ear-piece relays that the live stream will begin in 3 minutes. Although these daily progress reportsâupdating the nations on the Merge Infectionâhad become just another routine, Dr. Laurie Forrester still hated them. Her time was precious, with new projects and regulations coming in almost as fast as new infections. It felt like a new Scientific Age had begun and that anything was possible. The loss of life was, of course, tragic, but what plan doesnât have snags along the way? Her career had certainly been full of highs and lows.
âYouâre good to go in 5, 4, 3...â Brought back to the present, Laurie cleared her throat and double-checked her notes.
âGood morning, bonjour, and buenos dias everyone. Before I begin, Iâd like to remind you that we have both French and Spanish re-streams of these briefings for your convenience. Full transcripts will be available later in the day.
âLet me start this morning by giving an update on the current totals...â She checks the first paper and reads. â941 new cases, and 300 confirmed deaths in the past 24 hours. Several new clusters have been spotted in the San Diego area, so residents, please take all necessary precautions. Our teams are already working to contain the affected zones.
âAs we gradually and carefully work our way through this pandemic, some of you may have questions or concerns about compensation if you or your family members have been Infected. Rest assured, we are working on a new system to deal with this, and will have details in the coming weeks. Remember to isolate for the recommended time if you have been in close contact. And keep in mind that not all Infections are fatal. We would like to share some good news by providing an update on the case of Miguel Esparza, an 8-year-old boy who lost an arm to the Infection, but is now recovering with his family by his side, thanks to the help of our Derma research.â
Laurie knew the screen would cut to footage they shot of little Miguel testing his new artificial arm, his parents smiling with tears in their eyes. She winced internally, thinking how the arm had gone berserk hours later, the boy unwillingly smashing his motherâs face in. She flipped through her notes for a moment, centering herself before speaking again.
âAs you know, we are making decisions on a day-by-day basis. Our priority, firstly, is to curb the rate of infections before we create a vaccine. We are consistently adjusting to allow citizens keep a semblance of normality while also keeping people safe. With your help, we can get through this. Thank you, merci, and gracias.â
âCut! OK, thanks, Dr. Laurie. Weâll see you tomorrow.â They were already waving her offstage to set up the afternoon press conferences.
Finally, she thought. Today would be preliminary testing for a new Derma system, and Laurie had the perfect candidate already picked out.
