Results are presented for three outcomes; assaults which included intrusive sexual acts (acts in which the perpetrator committed an act of sexual penetration of the victim as opposed to touching, fondling, or acts in which the perpetrator was passive), sexual assaults which included violent force,2 and sexual assaults which resulted in the death of the victim. We present for each dependent variable a conjunctive analytic table. Each table presents the actual case counts as well as within-group percentages (each group being defined as the positive or negative for the dependent variable) for all possible combinations of the four independent variables.

The following series of observations apply to those cases which contained an intrusive sexual act as a component of the sexual assault as reported by the offender (Table 1). Intrusive sexual contact is a common component of sexual assault – we note that of the 624 cases about two-thirds (413 or 66.2%) involved intrusive sexual contact. In considering the presence of alcohol within these 413 cases around half of the offenders (200 cases) used alcohol. The simultaneous use of alcohol and drugs were slightly less than an even division between the two substances. Of the 200 alcohol cases, 113 used only alcohol while 87 offenders used drugs and alcohol in combination.

Solitary drug use was notably rare in comparison to solitary alcohol use. Only 31 offenders reported using drugs alone. Furthermore, a substantial number of offenders reported using no drugs or alcohol – 182 assault cases occurred without the use of any psychotropic substance.

In examining the overall occurrence of inhibitors and disinhibitors there were few cases in which all four disinhibitors were present. Only 15 cases (3.6%) were positive for all disinhibitors. In contrast nearly three times as many cases had no disinhibitors present at all – 40 cases were negative for all four disinhibitors. What is striking is that offenders frequently report use of pornography prior to the assault. There were 233 cases reporting the use of pornography. As well, anger was also notably frequent in the offender’s self-reports. Of the 413 intrusive sexual contact offenders 148 cases included self-reported anger.

In considering modal categories, we note interestingly that the highest frequency intrusive sex category is negative for all disinhibitors except for pornography. This classification accounts for 74 cases or approximately 18% of all cases of intrusive assault. The second most frequent category is pornography and alcohol positive which accounts for 51 cases (12.3%). The third most frequent category is ‘negative for all disinhibitors’, accounting for 40 cases or 9.7% of the group. Thus the presence of pornography and/or alcohol account for 111 or 26.9% of the cases. Those disinhibitors least likely to be present were the combination of drugs and anger, or the combination of drugs, anger, and pornography, each combination accounting for only five cases. There were no zero-order categories for intrusive sexual assault.
