Chapter Four

The Demon King

I got off work later than I’d hoped, much later, but at least the night was still young. I went home, changed out of my uniform, took a cool shower—which felt great, then put on a pair of black jeans and t-shirt. If I was going to go into some demon club, I guess I wanted to look the part. I climbed into my car to head to the club in the file. Supposedly, the demon king could be found there.

I parked my car in the vicinity of his club. Fever was the hottest club in the city. Therefore, there was no way I could park closer as the place was packed and the line was wrapping around the building. I never understood why people would wait outside of a club for ages just to get in. There are more clubs around town. What’s so damn special about this one? I walked up to the front door and the bouncer looked like he was ready to redirect me to the end of the line. I could tell by his aura he was a human possessed demon. This was going to be my third interaction with another demon and I was all business. I refuse to show any fear, even if I wasn’t sure how this was going to go or which route I should take. Hell, would he even know what kind of demon I was?

“I need to get in the club to see Mr. Sâma,” I said.

He looked me up from head to toe like I was some lame groupie. “No one sees Mr. Sâma without an invitation,” he said. “Get in the back of the line.”

Time for plan B. I pulled out my police badge. “It’s official business.”

He looked at it and smirked. “Well, then, Officer Cordero, where’s your fucking warrant?”

Okay, that didn’t work. I flashed my brand new insignia from the Society in hopes that his demonic vision would pick it up. He looked at my wrist and frowned. “Your fucking kind definitely ain’t getting in this club. Fuck off. Mr. Sâma wants nothing to do with… your organization.”

Okay, I went through plans A, B, and C and I still couldn’t get in the damn place. As a matter of fact, I went from being sent to the back of the line to being told to leave all together. Time for a new plan. Let’s see how much muscle an Agoto could flex. “Listen, I need to see Mr. Sâma, and if I have to go through your corpse to do so, that’s fine with me.”

“Like a cop would kill me,” he scoffed.

“Not in cold blood, no, but an Agoto would,” I said. “And I’m still a little hungry.”

He froze, then looked at me more closely. His eyes widened and he pulled out his walkie-talkie and said something I didn’t understand to another person. It didn’t sound like any language I’d heard of, but then I only spoke three languages: Spanish, Italian and English. I guess this was one of those things Raphael hinted at.
