CHAPTER 33

Rose parked her old smoke maker in Carmine Crescent. The house at forty four was a narrow three storeyed building of a type that normally belonged in a terrace. This one stood alone on a large block and Rose pulled a polished brass lever set flush in a wall bracket with the word ‘PULL’ engraved on it. She didn’t believe the invitation and searched for a button to press, there was none, she pulled the lever again and waited.

“Missus Holmes?” she asked the grey haired lady who answered the door.

“Yes, my dear?” The answer posed its own question.

“I’m Rose Canty, I represent the Sydney Sentinel.” She pushed her card into the woman’s hand.

“How may I help you?”

“Missus Holmes, your son Phillip has become the owner of the latest uranium mine to be granted the go ahead by the government. Without doubt, he’ll become a millionaire many times over when the mine goes into production. Our paper,” Rose said without blushing, “intends to publish a profile of young Phillip, the theme being that anyone can make it if they have courage and determination. To pad out the article, we’d like a little colour from his early background.”

“Certainly, Dear, come in. You’re Miss Canty?”

“Missus, actually, but please call me Rose. You and Mister Holmes must be very proud of your son, Missus Holmes.” This dishonesty was the only part of her job Rose disliked.

The old lady seemed to grow in stature and her eyes became bright with pride as she sighed. “Yes, Rose, we are proud. Very proud. Sit down, I’ll make a pot of tea and you can ask me what you like.”

On the way home Rose reflected on all she’d learnt from a doting old mum about the apple of her eye.

Phillip Raymond Holmes was not an athletic child but he had a good mind. As a result his early school years were pretty miserable because he was subjected to all of the pranks bullies pull on ‘nerds’.

In later years the same bullies courted his company when they realised he could guide them through their grey areas in academia. They would vie with each other for position in their attempts to sit near him in class. Young Phillip sailed through primary and secondary school, and his university days were a breeze, as well

Missus Holmes produced a series of photographs which told the graphic story of Phillip’s life from babyhood to the present. Her story included several university yearbooks and Rose selected one of these books, the final year. She asked the old lady if she could take it so she could include a little about each of Phillip’s fellow graduates in her article. A sort of ‘where are they now’ piece. The yearbook now sat on the seat beside her.

“Les,” she said when she got inside, “look what I’ve got.” She opened the pages of the yearbook to a photo of a young Phillip Holmes.

“Yeah that’s him,” Les agreed. “So what!”

“Da daaah!” she sang, and with a theatrical wave of her arm she flipped to another page.
