2—

In the morning, Amanda offered a very stiff apology. “I was out of line and should not have spoken to a fellow agent in such a manner. I am sorry.”

Roan, who also felt the need to apologize, despite not having done anything wrong, nodded once. Hoping to dismiss the entire thing, he said, “It happens when people work in such close proximity for so long. We forget our boundaries. Let’s just chalk it up as a learning experience.”

Amanda studied him closely before answering, “Fine.” She had bought herself a green and gold cloak, and when she turned from him it flared in the sun.

“Fine?” Jarrod asked under his breath. “I don’t know a lot about women, but I know when one of them says that something is fine, it’s definitely not fine.”

“No one asked you, Jarrod,” Roan said, hitching his pack. They marched down the steep hill until they came to the markets. These were unlike anything Roan could have envisioned. A good portion of the hill had been dug out to form chambers and tunnels where any manner of goods could be bought, including livestock, which added an eye-watering aroma to the entire affair.

As they were passing the first of the stalls—a pen crammed with sheep in need of shearing—Jarrod said, “It’ll be a long walk and poor Marshall has to lug all that armor…but I guess it is cheaper.”

“We’re not walking,” Roan said, stepping over a chicken. They were surrounded by the birds, all of whom seemed intent on pecking at Marshall’s metal encased legs. “If I had an idea about what sort of terrain is between here and Mendenome, it would make figuring…”

“Did you say Mendenome?” a cloaked and hooded man asked, appearing suddenly at Roan’s elbow. Pretty much like everyone else around them, he was armed with sword and dagger. “I am putting together an expedition to Mendenome. Maybe we can join forces. What level are you guys?”

Jarrod shoved him away. “Like we would tell you. And besides our party has a rogue, so take a hike.” Roan was a little surprised at Jarrod’s behavior and it must have shown. “You can’t trust most rogues, especially ones who look like that guy. He looks like the kind of guy who’ll slit your throat while you sleep just for the fun of it.”

Roan didn’t see how anyone could find fun in hurting others. He gazed after the rogue and saw him whispering with two others, both of whom looked as disreputable as the first. Just the sight of them firmed up a thought that had been floating around in his head. “We’ll ride horses, the fastest that we can afford. We haven’t been exactly flying under the radar since we got here and I want to get to Mendenome as soon as possible.”

He started walking and nearly plowed into a young woman in a plain blue dress and scuffed black boots. “Good morning, milord. Did I hear you correctly? Did you say, Mendenome?”

“Didn’t we just go through this?” Roan asked, throwing up his hands and trying to push past.
