Chapter 3

Jinady sat on the edge of the bed. Scor had moved past him on the mattress to sit with his back against the wall. Figaru sat on the chair at Scor’s small table. He was still in anguish.

“I can’t let Leatha die, Jinady,” Figaru said.

Jinady verged on tears. “How long will this take?”

“Years,” Scor said.

Figaru and Jinady both looked at him.

“That’s what you said, right boss?”

Jinady turned back to Figaru. The demon continued eyeing Scor.

“Years?” Jinady said. His voice became choked.

“It will…it will be an arduous quest. I don’t know what hope we have to succeed.” Figaru swallowed. “We must be strong, Jinady. I need you to remain here as a shard gatherer. I must become mated with Vandrel. Our plans…they’re no longer meant to be.”

Jinady began to cry. Scor nudged himself to the edge of the bed to rub his back.

“Will you accept Scor as your Guardian?”

He looked up. Figaru was keeping his expression placid. After a moment, Jinady nodded.

Yes!

Scor wrapped both his arms around him as he continued to sob.

“Before I leave with Vandrel the two of you must go on a mission to the Glowing Mount. Things must be made right with Swan. Both of you can bear witness and be advocates for the settlement. I need to know we’ll continue to get shards. I can’t leave this land otherwise.”

Scor’s eyes narrowed. “Don’t worry. If Swan won’t give them to us, Gala will. She’s sweet on me. Everything will be fine here. You just go and take care of Leatha.”

Figaru locked eyes with him a brief moment. Then he said, “Scor would like to share his cabin with you Jinady. I can place you in another officer’s cabin if you prefer.”

Jinady looked at him in distress.

Scor swallowed. Accept me, Jinady. He didn’t want the hurdle of convincing him to live here. He was his Guardian. He’d become his mate.

“I’ll stay here. It’s fine.”

Scor closed his eyes.

Figaru stood. He took one of Jinady’s hands. “You’ll always be dear to me.” He left for the door.

Jinady covered his face and became wracked with sobs. He was leaning away from Scor. The demon tolerated it. He rubbed his back as he wept. Figaru closed the door behind him.

Scor let him continue weeping. He’d only grieve longer if he held back; that’s how mortals were. When his wails began to quiet he brought him a dipper of cold water and helped him drink.

“Stay here,” Scor said. “I’ll get your things.”

Jinady snuffled.

It was Vandrel who opened the door for Scor at Figaru’s house. The red-skinned demon wore only a long yellow belted tunic. His hair looked mussed.

“He doesn’t want to see anyone.”

“How you doing, General? Heard you fucked up a spell.”

Vandrel fumed through his nostrils. He led him down the corridor to the parlor.

“Nice to see you’re back to your old self,” Vandrel said.

“I put up a good front.”

Scor looked around. Figaru’s house had changed little since he lived there. “Where’s Jinady’s things?”

Vandrel pointed to a couch. “Sit. Stay.”

Scor plopped down.

“Good dog,” Vandrel said

He stretched out his legs, unperturbed.
