Katy stood next to the four men as they peered out the rear doors of the gym. Each of them held aluminum baseball bats they’d procured from the gymnasium’s storeroom. The automatic lights had kicked on outside, illuminating the large, squat Industrial Arts building where the Wood, Metal, and Auto shop classes were held. Beyond the structure, deep shadows shrouded the immense athletics field where anything could be lurking. She pleaded again. “Don’t go, guys. We’ll think of something else.”

Justin caressed her cheek, his feelings for her stronger than ever. “Don’t worry, we’ll be fine.” He glanced back to the inner doors. The reunion banner they’d used to cover the windows still hung taped in place, keeping Bill’s—and his companions’—dead prying eyes from witnessing their exit. Bill had started his mocking tapping and singing taunts again, assuring them he remained behind the glass, but there were several more alumni still missing from the equation, not to mention an unknown number of police. Justin hoped they hadn’t all ended up like Bill, and weren’t waiting to ambush them.

He pointed to Lewis and Jerry. “You guys go around the school to the left. Clinton and I will go right and meet you out front at the rental car. If anything goes wrong, and I mean anything, just run, forget the papers, and get back to these doors.” He faced his ex-girlfriend. “Katy, be ready to let us back inside.” After she offered a reluctant nod, he focused on his friends again. “You guys ready?”

He waited as brother and best friends each nodded, wringing the handles of their baseball bats nervously. “Okay, guys, let’s do this.”

Katy slid the metal pole from the handles. The hollow rasp of metal on metal caused sweat to bead on Justin’s forehead. He opened the doors as quietly as possible and peered outside. When an attack didn’t come, he motioned for the others to follow.

The old friends crept out into the night, silent as thieves. Before splitting, Clinton motioned to his friends, stabbing two fingers to his eyes and turning the digits to his buddies: keep your eyes peeled. They headed off in opposite directions.

Justin watched as Jerry and Lewis hunched low and scooted their way to the left. He turned and nodded to his brother, who returned it with a slap on the back and a loving smile. Before setting off, Justin glanced at the door’s window. Katy waved and crossed her fingers, her worried look squeezing his ribs, threatening to pulverize his heart. Even though he thought it cheesy, he blew her a kiss, and was rewarded with a peck on the glass from his ex. Justin forced his gaze from the lipstick smudged on the window, and scanned the door’s outer surface. Thankfully, there weren’t any patterns or symbols drawn in blood there. It would’ve been a short mission if there had been. This thought caused Justin’s heart to skip a beat.

“Lewis,” Justin hissed. Thankfully his friend lingered within earshot. Lewis stopped and turned with a shocked stare covering his face, halting Jerry with a hand on his shoulder.
