Chapter 15

“What do you mean he just showed up?” Whitney shrieks over FaceTime, blue-tipped bob swinging at her shoulders.

My phone is propped on my nightstand while I browse the costume closet for tonight’s assigned outfit. “I mean, he is here, playing guitar with the party band for the entire two weeks. It’s okay. No need to get overexcited.”

Call me the Energizer Bunny for all my excitement, but Whitney doesn’t need to know that right now.

With Adam rehearsing for tonight’s Grease-themed sock hop most of the day, I’ve had plenty of time to think about last night.

After the walk home, he held the door open for me, kissed my hand, and wished me sweet dreams. Said he’d always wanted to do all of that in that exact order.

Of course, I didn’t sleep at all. His moonlit gaze was all I could see when I closed my eyes. His words playing over and over in my head: My feelings for you are not fragile.

My heart stutters.

“Ben! You can’t just casually mention this and not expect me to freak out. After what happened during the filming, then seeing your names break the internet, all of Fern Falls is losing their shit. Mayor Park is calling a town hall.”

I snap my attention to the screen. “Whitney, oh my god.”

“I’m fucking with you.” She laughs.

I sigh. My nerves are going gaywire. “Whitney, please. This conversation has gotten way off track. I only have two questions.”

“Okay,” she says, leaning into the screen. “Call me your love guru, let’s go.”

“Is everything going okay at the bakery? Please tell me the paparazzi haven’t descended upon Fern Falls, too.”

She groans. “Oh my god, of course you would ask about the bakery at a time like this.” She nods. “Yes. Everything is under control. Tanner brought in a second espresso machine from the bar’s kitchen to handle the new tourists visiting because of the TV show, and he pulled in some of his off-shift employees to help with the crowds.” She smiles softly. “He’s, um, actually been really helpful.”

Her words are such a relief.

I still have to appease Delish Dollars Studios with good PR before our Zoom call, and I don’t think the paparazzi fiasco of last night is gonna do the trick. After checking Instagram this morning, not much has swayed the BoycottBen hashtaggers. I need to talk with Adam. I know he’d take photos with me, but this thing between us is so new, something I’ve wanted for so long. I don’t want to share private moments with the intent of swaying online haters. If I post photos of us, it’ll be because I want to share how I feel when I’m with him: overjoyed.

“What else?” she asks.

“Hm?”

“What was your second question?”

I blush so hard I press a hand to my cheek. “I need your help getting ready for tonight’s party.”

Her eyes widen. “Is this our early oughts romcom movie moment?”

I shake my head. “Whit, no. I don’t want a full makeover. I just . . .” I pull out the hanger labeled with today’s date: a white T-shirt and jeans.
