Her phone began to ring as she pulled off the side of the road. Lylia glanced at the screen. "How the hell does he know?" she wondered aloud and turned off the engine.

It was like Miles had some Spidey sense when it came to her disobeying him.

Lylia left her purse and grabbed the envelope. She tucked her keys into her coat pocket and headed down the embankment. There was a small stream and she followed it for a few hundred feet until she came to the rocks. A couple giant boulders were stacked in a pile. This was the very first place she had ever made a drop. Scared out of her mind, she had been shaking when she shoved the check into the one crevasse.

She didn't shake now.

Lylia moved the leaves that had fallen out of the way and slipped the envelope into the small space. It always took some wiggling to get her hand back out.

A low, excited growl sounded not ten feet from her. Lylia snapped her head around, she hadn't heard anything but the trickle of water.

The wolf was crouched low. Its teeth bared in a snarl. He was happy. Happy that she was here. Happy that she was alone. Happy that he could end it all right now. He didn't hide any of this because he planned on killing her.

Lylia tugged her hand out of the hole, not even wincing as a sharp edge cut the back of her hand. She didn't stand but stayed crouched. It'd be easier to jump into gear once he made his move.

The wolf's ears flattened against his head and he snapped his teeth a few times in her direction.

Was that supposed to intimidate her? Idiot.

She slid her hand into her pocket and gripped her pepper spray. With the safety flipped, she kept her hand in her pocket but her finger on the trigger.

"Well, are you just going to stand there or do what you came to do?" she asked, because she didn't have all day.

His eyes narrowed and she watched his back legs tense before they pushed off from the ground, hurdling at her. Lylia threw herself to the side, rolled away from the rocks and on to her knees. The wolf barreled into her. Had she been standing, the impact to the ground would have knocked her out and maybe even killed her. There were rocks everywhere around here.

He jumped away as she began to push herself up off the ground but darted back and bit her calf. Lylia grunted as she tried to shake him off. She kicked at him with her free leg, striking his head a few times. He let go but darted back again and grabbed her arm. This time she felt his teeth pierce her skin. She tried to cry out but no sound came from her open mouth. The pain had stolen the breath from her lips.

Their eyes were less than a foot apart. Using the adrenaline that would soon wear off, Lylia punched him as hard as she could.
