When we first arrived at what was to be our home for the next ten months or so, Uncle Ray immediately rushed through to the kitchen and turned the wireless up loud so we could all hear the news: ‘the war was raging... Hitler was having a bit of bother in his Berlin bunker and the Russians were closing in on him...’ Everyone everywhere in those days seemed to be crowding around and listening to the wireless, day and night. Only the bare essentials of work were done while the news ran hot. King George was making his usual pathetic speeches while Winston Churchill was inspiring the multitude with his rendition of the war and what the Allies had done and were now about to do. More planes roared overhead, lower, faster, louder, while even more of us remained glued to the wireless – eagerly awaiting that one big announcement signalling the end of the war.
