When Jessica awoke, feeling refreshed and alert, it took a moment for her to remember where she was. Sunlight poured into the unfamiliar bedroom through a small gap in the curtains. She glanced at the bedside clock. It was nearly five in the afternoon. After sinking into a long hot bath that morning, Jessica had slept all day. She felt better for it and would have dismissed the events of the night before as a weird dream had she not found herself in Mathilde's bedroom. The bedroom of a witch, hidden deep in the French countryside.

'Yes, it could,' she realised. She was about to perform some kind of sex-magick ritual and honestly didn't know whether to be terrified or thrilled. She slipped out of bed. Mathilde had taken her clothes to be washed, so she slid into the white robe and white slippers left out for her, then padded down the steps into the kitchen. Through the kitchen window, she could see Mathilde out in the yard feeding a dozen or so chickens while a slick black cat lazily watched. The woman had a mesmerising beauty hidden under a warm coat and rugged old farm clothes, and Jessica found she had a thousand questions for her; how long had she lived alone here? Could she really do magic? How did she come into contact with werewolves? Were there other supernatural creatures?

She had to save those questions for later. Perhaps they would have time to talk once all this madness was over.

Jessica noticed a note on a mug placed next to a kettle. It read 'Drink This' . Dutifully, she flicked on the kettle and poured boiling hot water over the dried black herbs gathered at the bottom of the mug. The tea stank, but she was surprised at the sweet taste of blackberry and liquorice. She wondered if this was part of the ritual or just part of French culture. She still had so much to learn about a country that she had grown up living so close to.

"Ah, good, you found the damiana tea." Mathilde stomped her feet on the doormat and slammed the door behind her. "How are you feeling? Strong?"

"I slept well," Jessica replied uncertainly.

"You need to be strong for this, Jessica, this is not the woo woo hippy California bullshit, yes?" She waved her hand dismissively and Jessica smiled, enjoying the woman’s down-to-earth brusqueness. It felt reassuring. "This is real power we are playing with, not fire but dynamite, yes? We need to be strong enough to throw off this bond of yours.
