Time and story

Our working definition of imagination has been: the generation of meaningful images and narratives arising in consciousness. The previous chapter explored the neurobiological correlates of meaningful imagery. This chapter will now shift to look at meaningful narratives and how they might be understood from a neurobiological perspective. We will begin with a brief exploration of the evolution of story in the brain and its important social functions in cultural identity and group cohesion. This is followed by a discussion of the psychosocial role of narrative for the individual, both developmentally in the child as well as later in adult life. The question of how narrative shows up in our lives inevitably leads to a discussion of episodic memory, a process in which we re-experience not only facts but immersive stories about our past. Finally, we will consider how all of these pieces fit together with imaginative processes in recent research into the default mode network of the brain. This chapter will focus primarily on how narrative is processed by the brain, with the specific question of creating new stories and narratives being taken up in Chapter 8 on creativity.
