Iâm downstairs in my room when Mac comes home that night. âThrow it in the bin,â I hear him say. âThrow it in the bin and forget about it.â
âWhy should I?â Sheâs had two cans of Stella and about a hundred cigarettes since The Bastards pushed the note through the letterbox. âYou think itâs okay to threaten people now?â
âIâm not saying that.â Mac is covered in plaster-dust and paint from the new-builds heâs working on and there are sweat rings under his armpits. He swipes his T-shirt over his head and wipes his face and the back of his neck with it. He looks tired. Mum would normally wait for him to get in the shower before starting but tonight sheâs too rattled to care. âAll Iâm saying is leave it. Let the kid rest in peace.â
âIâm not the one stirring ashes.â For someone with a permanently husky voice sheâs starting to sound more like Bette Midler in Hocus Pocus. âThey know Summer should be there, fuck knows she did moreââ
âStick another record on, Liz!â Mac snaps. âThis isnât about who did what. This is about a mother saying goodbye to her daughter. How do you think youâd feel?â
Standing behind my door I sense the hesitation, knowing theyâre probably both staring down the stairs because Iâm down here. Cee, sitting at my dressing table brushing her hair, refuses to meet my eyes. We both know itâs impossible for Mum to know how it feels, because Iâm the one whoâs still alive. The pills didnât kill me.
A door slams. A dish or mug or plate or something crashes against the kitchen floor before the door bounces off the wall on its way open again.
âYou know what?â she screeches. âYou take everyone elseâs bloody side. Donât you worry about us, weâll sort ourselves out, you selfish fucking arsehole.â She thumps downstairs and screams at him from her bedroom, âYou like âem that much why donât you take your stuff and go live with them.â
âYeah, itâs me whoâs selfish. Iâm not the one throwing your daughter out there to be eaten by the wolves.â
I glance at Cee. Her family are the wolves Mac is referring to and I feel guilty because thatâs down to me too. Macâs trying to protect me from Ceeâs family, because Iâm vulnerable, but what about them? Arenât they vulnerable right now, too? I donât want my best friend to start hating me . . . not now . . .
She winks at me. âDonât worry. Iâm not going anywhere.â
