Chapter 10

A Realisation and a Revelation

After my friends had left, we didn’t have any groups for three weeks. Up till now, I had not recovered a single dollar of my investment and neither had we made any profit. I was wondering how I would pay for next month’s rent and for the food for our guardian and the boat every time we went to the lodge. Every time we had to go to the port of Bellavista Nanay, it cost us S/.4 one way in the mototaxi. We had to calculate this in too. I knew that our business was not going to work. I had almost no money left to even buy basics such as food, let alone to support the guardian or do anything else. Paco didn’t have any money either because he had left his other job so that he could work for me. If we did not earn anything, he didn’t either. One morning after breakfast, when I was just about to check our emails, Paco was getting ready to go out.

“Where are you going, honey? You know I have to go to the lodge today and take some food for Juan.”

“I have to go to see some friends,” he said. “They might have a short job opportunity for me. We are not making any money here, so I’ll see if I can do something about it. Just go by yourself today, you’ll be all right.”

I was wondering what this job opportunity was. I didn’t know all his friends. Sometimes he went out in the evening and left me at home alone. He never told me where he was going. Several times over the past few months, he had come back drunk at night. I really hated that, especially because I didn’t drink. And how could he buy alcohol anyway if there was no money? It hurt me. He was my partner and he said he loved me. He had even been talking about marriage. Now I was not so sure about that. Was he still using drugs, or even dealing?

Did he lie to me when he said he stopped years ago?

“What is this job opportunity honey? And when are you coming back? I need your help here, it’s our business and I don’t want to be alone with Jorge,” I complained.

“I’ll probably be back tomorrow, but I’m not sure yet. I should not be away for more than two days. Don’t worry about anything, okay,” he said, then kissed me and he was gone.

There was a lovely dog living with the owner of the house where we rented our space. She was quite tall with short brown fur. Sacha was a very good guardian of the house. Every time a stranger entered the house she barked. This was also the case when tourists came to our agency to inquire about our tours. Sacha knew us well and never barked at us. And she was in love with me! Every time I went shopping she ran after me and joined me on my errands.
